When Mira, a 250-pound swarthy Asian Indian, fantasizing herself as sparkly blue-eyed actress Cameron Diaz, is raped by a radical Black Muslim Panther at a public high school "Woodstock" dance, her conservative Hindu father refuses to acknowledge the rape for fear she will be "spoiled fruit." Instead of addressing the problem, her school counselor argues the issue of the Kashmir war with Mira's father. Mira's father emphatically states Kashmir is the land of shimmering lakes and houseboats, the land of the Hindus, whereas the level-headed counselor feels it should be fairly divided between the Hindus and Muslims. Disillusioned and caught up in her absurd world, Mira, who has been repeatedly failing in school resorts to eating and sleeping while her sister Devi (meaning Goddess) is a beautiful go-getter in medical school. Managing to graduate, Mira works as a cashier for a going-out-of- business grocery store, where she meets handsome, Jheri-curled Andy, the African American manager of the store. The two "picnic" at the empty cash register counter on "soul" food and form a bond. On Andy's request, Mira decides to move in with him. Embracing her new found freedom, she encounters a hilarious caste of characters from a Julio Iglesius look-alike to Alice, her eventual room-mate, a speech therapist who whistles "happy tunes" and whose clients continue to stutter but learn to whistle happy tunes.
The Absurd Adventures of Mira Sujata Rayers Books
Sujata Rayers, author of The Absurd Adventures of Mira chose to use the word "absurd" in her title. After reading the book, I was thinking about my review, and I decided to look up the word "absurd." Here is what I found: "utterly or obviously senseless, illogical, or untrue; contrary to all reason or common sense; laughably foolish or false." The synonyms for absurd are listed as irrational, silly, ludicrous, nonsensical, ridiculous, and preposterous.I must admit that while growing to enjoy the character of Mira, I thought that many of the "adventures" that she experienced truly were unusual and out of the ordinary. Author Rayers truly packs many negative experiences into one character's life. For her sake, I hope that this book wasn't based on personal experiences...not all of it, at least. But be that as it may, the main character of Mira, drew me in. Through all of her experiences, she battles a weight problem due to emotional eating. There are many of us that can relate. Mira, through all of her ups and downs, is able to get control of that problem, and lose over half of her body weight. But the message is way more than a weight loss message...it is a message for looking for the positive even while traveling on a negative journey.
Mira is a resilient character...one who is caring and giving. She works through all of the "mis-adventures" that come her way through the people that come into her life. So, I would say that even though the storyline takes us through "absurd adventures," readers can still learn through Mira and enjoy the book. It does not fall into the category of "laughably foolish or false," even though readers will find themselves laughing at times. Tears may also come while reading when readers relate to Mira's emotions...so Sujata Rayers has created a story with an emotional roller coaster, but leaves both her character and readers with hope at the end...which just might be the beginning.
The author requested for me to read her book and write a review if I found her book worthy of one. She provided a copy of the book for me to do so.

The Absurd Adventures of Mira Sujata Rayers Books Reviews
Mira, a 250 pound affectionate and concerned Asian Indian woman, goes through so many ups and downs, not only with her weight, but with life it self. Mira and the people she cares about, goes though so much sadness and pain. Though it all she keeps her head up and still find a way to enjoy life.
Author Sujata, manages to put so many different every day troubles, into this one book. You could say Mira been there, done that, and went though that, or knows someone that has. This story hits just about every terrible thing that could happen to someone.
At the same time there is love, excitement, and laughter. Mira is a Mother Teresa, Harriett Tubman, and Marie Currie, all rolled into one. She is a woman who always puts other first, no matter what their difficulty or faults may be.
This is the first story I have read from author Sujata Rayers and I will definitely recommend it to others to read. I also will always have a smile on my face when I think of yellow daffodils.

4 stars.
Mira is an Indian-American living in present-day Louisiana. She is also swarthy, weighs 250 pounds, and fantasizes herself as blonde, blue-eyed Cameron Diaz. At a high school party, she is raped by a member of the Black Panthers. her father refuses to acknowledge the rape out of concern that it will make her "spoiled fruit" when it comes time for marriage. Mira moves in with Andy, the manager of the local grocery store that soon goes out of business.
Among their neighbors is a Julio Iglesias look-alike. He is so convincing that a married couple, also neighbors, kidnap him and hold him for ransom. While they spend the next several years in prison, Andy and Mira become foster parents to their two children. Junior is a precocious child who is helping Dad write a guide to local plants while he is in prison.
Mira gets a job at a local clothing store, where her handmade Mardi Gras costumes are a hit. Another clothing store where Mira works is bought and becomes part of a chain. Mira is part of a group who travels to India looking for companies who can supply them with clothes to sell. Mira is able to meet some of her relatives.
Back home, Devi, Mira's sister, becomes part of the clothing empire (her proper, Indian, marriage ended in divorce). Mira has not spoken with her father since the day she disobeyed him by moving in with Andy (who was killed by a grizzly bear during a camping trip). Do they get back together? Do they at least talk to each other?
This is a really interesting story. It's plausible, and well-written, amd Mira certainly has plenty of "adventures." Yes, it's worth reading.
